Apatite (Purple)

Purple Apatite from Maine represents the “royal violet” peak of the phosphate world. A calcium phosphate species, it is a mineral I have always respected for its rare and intense “grape” to “deep orchid” saturation—a color profile that is exceptionally scarce for the species outside of a few select pockets in New England. It typically presents as sharp, hexagonal prisms with a vitreous to sub-adamantine luster. For the specialist, Maine Apatite is a prize of manganese-driven beauty; it offers a “neon” brilliance that remains vibrant even in small crystal sizes. It is a stone of “lucid intensity,” providing a sophisticated, high-frequency aesthetic that makes it a true “North American classic” for the systematic vault.

The Heritage & Discovery

Historical Significance: The pegmatites of Maine have been a vital source of gemstone-grade minerals since the 19th century. Historically, while Maine is famous for its Tourmalines, the discovery of “royal purple” Apatite remains a significant event for systematic collectors. In the world of fine minerals, it is celebrated for its sharp crystal morphology and its remarkable transparency. It stands as a symbol of regional geological pride, bridging the gap between common phosphate ores and the elite world of “top-shelf” collector gems. It serves as a reminder that the rugged mountains of Maine still harbor some of the most “electrifying” colors found in the mineral kingdom.

Discovery: The name is derived from the Greek apate, meaning “to deceive,” as it was historically mistaken for other species like Peridot or Aquamarine. Scientifically, it is a member of the Apatite group (usually Fluorapatite). Its discovery in the Oxford County pegmatites provided mineralogists with the first clear look at how high concentrations of manganese can influence the phosphate lattice to create such deep, “royal” purples. My own respect for this material grew from observing its extraordinary “glow”; under short-wave ultraviolet light, these specimens often exhibit a “mustard-yellow” fluorescence that contrasts beautifully with their natural violet hue.

Important Mines: The undisputed world capital for the finest “deep purple” Apatite is the Mount Mica Quarry and the Pulsifer Quarry on Mount Apatite in Auburn, Maine, USA. These historic localities set the global standard for the variety. I also have a high regard for the “neon-purple” occurrences found in Stoneham, Maine. For the vault, I prioritize the Pulsifer material for its unmatched “grape-jelly” saturation and its textbook hexagonal geometry.

Mineralogical Profile

Description: Apatite is a calcium phosphate that crystallizes in the hexagonal system. It sits at a 5 on the Mohs scale, making it the defining mineral for that hardness. Because it is somewhat “brittle,” it must be handled with care and protected from acids. It is characterized by its vitreous luster and its unmistakable “violet-to-purple” color palette.

One of its most identifying traits is its lack of strong cleavage and its moderate refractive index ($n \approx 1.63$ to 1.64). It has a specific gravity ($SG \approx 3.1$ to 3.2), making it feel slightly heavier than Quartz. Because it forms in evolved granite pegmatites, it is often found in association with Quartz, Cleavelandite, and Lepidolite. When I select a piece for the collection, I look for “razor-sharp” hexagonal terminations and a “liquid-violet” interior, as these highlight the sophisticated, three-dimensional geometry that makes Maine Apatite a standout for the systematic specialist. It is a dense, high-vibration mineral that offers a unique, “electric-royal” beauty unlike any other phosphate.

Chemical Formula: Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)
